Fear Itself

February 3, 2019

I'm back again with another installment of the Fit Tea Blog! We've covered a lot of things in this short time. If you've missed some of our other topics please go back and check them out. I hope that the topics that have been discussed will help someone.

If there is one thing I could go back in time and tell my younger self it would be to just start. As I grew older I was searching for what I was passionate about and when I found it I still waited to just begin pursuing it. Why didn't I just go after it? I can sum it up in one word.....FEAR. The fear that I didn't have the knowledge, I didn't know where to go to find the knowledge, just overall fear. Fear is the difference between happiness and complacency.

I was working at a job that I begun to hate, I dreaded going to work but I knew I had to pay the bills. What made me just start my own business was being completely fed up with following somebody else's useless rules and feeling like I was fulfilling someone else's dream, as well as not getting paid my fair share. It was that breaking point when I made the decision that I couldn't take it anymore and that no matter what I was gonna take a chance. My rationale was that I didn't have any children so all I had to do was take care of myself, and that I wanted to just enjoy my day.

So I did it, I gave my weekend notice. Now I know what you're saying weekend?! In my experience a job has never been loyal to me, that job could let me go at anytime and since I wasn't looking for any recommendations or referrals there was no reason to give them the luxury of having notice. When my shift was over I put in my resignation and boy did it feel great! But little did I know that that bliss would not last and that the upcoming year would be the most trying time of my life.

So, I started my business, and boy was it slow; nothing like I was expecting. I didn't make nearly enough to cover my bills and this is when things started to take a turn for the worse. I was trying hard to build my business, as many of you reading this post understand my business is client based. People are very finicky, which meant I would have to make them aware of my services then convince them that they needed my services and after that there is no guarantee that they will stay around long term. Going month to month not knowing how much money you're gonna be working with is a scary thing, and this is the trade off of entrepreneurship versus working for someone. You own your own business and the revenue is very inconsistent, especially starting out, but when you work for a company you have a set salary and you should expect a consistent paycheck.

I could go on and on about all the trials and tribulations of starting and maintaining your very own business but I will save it for future posts. Let's just say my first year in business I faced shut off notices, tax penalties, car repossession, etc. It is for these reasons most of us aren't willing or can't take the risk. There are a lot of things I learned from those experiences that I would definitely do different. Now those things happened to me because of my own mistakes and so what I want everyone who reads this to take from my mistakes is that I was willing to take the risk, it doesn't mean you will face the exact same failures. You just have to be brave enough to take the risk.

This post is for those of you who know in your heart that you should be doing something else. You have to step out there, you have to move in the direction that you want to go, don't just accept the status quo in your life. Although I am not where I want to be, I am certainly not where I was and I don't regret any of it. I have more responsibility and stress but it is fun now and that has made all the difference.
